I think most people may have an idea about is one. Surely this local Society are responsible for supporting all aspects of the history of the heath, so the 85 odd years of the Tea Hut should count for something.

History is great but even that has to sometimes move with the times.

What are your thoughts?

I suspect that many of the so called Blackheath Society would not be remotely interested in the realities of the daily life on the heath unless there is a monetary gain for them. Many houses and places on the heath have been used for filming and television productions, giving the owners money so there is their incentive. Suggesting that an almost 100 year old enterprise, looking after the locals and travelers needs for refreshment without the society having a percentage would be useless because the snobs wouldn't be seen to be slumming it with the likes of the public on "their" heath !
The Tea Hut is as integral to the area as much as anything else. It obviously doesn't stop the local heath maintenance contractors using the facility so why stop anyone else by restricting parking?

I was a regular visitor to the HUT in 1998/9 and the year of the eclipse.
It was a place to go that wasn't McDonalds, Animal Burger was egg-tastic.
I have so many good memories of working at the old golf club building at the top of the
hill that burned out so many wagon clutches!!! The smell…
After a night out walking across in the dark to devour a bacon butty.
Nice time of my life.

I live in Blackheath. Just watched Tea Time. The Blackheath Society guy is an utter douchebag.

The teahut is amazing, an institution. I have been living in this area 13 years and am disgusted at the Blackheath Society for trying to get rid of something that caters to the ordinary person in the area. We LOVE the Teahut.

I really don't get this war over the tea hut at all. My parents brought me to Blackheath when I was a matter of weeks old and lived there until I became an adult and moved to Sussex.

Admittedly I have never been a member of the Blackheath Society, but my parents were privileged enough to live on the Cater estate near to some of the more expensive houses. I have used the hut previously and think its great. If the Blackheath Society think that the hut is an eyesore then surely they would be better off donating funds to the owner to pretty it up? Maybe install an underground car park so they don't need to look at the trucks and cars etc? It could be covered in grass and such and would look very natural. Also the hut could be re-built from Bath Stone in an old-fashioned style and it would resemble an out-building from the near-by palace on the other side of the park. Blackheath has a proud past containing homes of naval officers etc. Maybe it could be re-built with a maratime theme, perhaps from whatever is left of the Cutty Sark?
