Pondering the Tea Hut....... over the years

The Blackheath Tea Hut has been in existence for many years and is a big part of the history of the Heath.  Indeed, numerous people will fondly tell of the stories of how there fathers and even grandfathers would take them there for tea and the speciality for which it was well known for being the deliciously spiced up sausagemeat sandwiches.

It is proving difficult to establish exactly when it was given permission to be there and by whom. Many customers talk of a Royal Charter but as yet, no hard facts back this theory.  So if there are any interested, helpful, budding historians reading this, their input would be very much appreciated.

More testimony to the popularity of the Tea Hut is the fact that it is still there, despite many years of harrassment from certain members of local organisations.  Indeed in the thirty years I, as present owner, have been there, they have tried to get it removed.  Furthermore, the previous owners experienced similar problems.

These same organisations are well established, having committees and officers, but none of these have ever attempted to make contact with me concerning their grievances.  It has been described as being there unlawfully !! (Page 46, THE HEATH)  Surely, were that the case, would it have not been removed many years ago?

The fact that we are obviously trading legally has made these same people change their tactics.  Consequently, with the collusion of other like minded committees, the parking in and around the Tea Hut (on both sides of the road) has been systematiclly decimated.

In or around 2001, many roads were closed to traffic across the heath, namely:
  • Long Pond Rd
  • A large section of Duke Humphrey Rd
  • Whitefield Rd
  • A small section of Mounts Pond Rd

The majority of these closed off sections were then reinstated as heath land.

Lewisham highways simultaneously upgraded Goffers Rd.  They also installed three lay-bys. The remaining one is halfway along the road near Whitefields Mount and the pond.  This lay-by is at times filled up with foriegn tourist buses.

The other two that were, at considerable expense, installed close to the Tea Hut, were mysteriously closed after only two months.  This obviously involved a lot of extra work adding further and unnecessary expenditure.

I have asked Lewisham Council to explain why these lay-bys were removed and at whose instigation.

I also pointed out what an enormous and frivolious waste of tax payers' money this was, if the reasons were merely to further diminish the parking facilities of the Tea Hut customers.

These comments were posted in an email sent to Lewisham Borough Council on the 13th May 2009.  To date, I have still had no reply.  This discourteous and disinterested attitude is deplorable, considering this is the same council to which I dutifully pay my business rates.

I too hav many fond memories of the hut which I still visit to this day - now with my children at times. It was my refuelling point on the walk home - normally around 2-3am back in the 80's when I was courting my soon to be wife.

I have been going to tea hut for ages and I don't know how many double cheeseburgers (with onions) I have had from there, but each time I enjoy it as much as the last, and in these cold days on the heath nothing is better than a hot chocolate from there too. Tongue outSmile

Life would not be complete with out the tea hut, it would definitely not be worth going to Blackheath or Greenwich ever again if it was gone.

Thanks for everything, Tea Hut

Tom: The Hut

A great little part of Blackheath - there are only good things that can be said about the Hut. Whenever I've visited, the staff have been friendly and the food good.

The Hut is not a nuisance to anyone, regardless of what people may say. It's just a friendly, convenient, local, independent business to which I offer genuine supoort.

To the staff - just keep standards good and stay friendly and happy, and the people will keep coming!

All the best!

I visit the tea hut on a regulary bases, and in no shape or form is it interfearing with anyone or anything?

I would possibly understand if it was right next to a house, but it isn't, its in the middle of a field, on the A2?

Still long live the hut. :)

Londoner: The Blackheath Tea Hut

The Blackheath Tea Hut is an excellent place to grab some food and a nice hot or cold drink. There's not that many places in London that serve food 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so I'm really pleased that the Tea Hut exists. The staff are nice and friendly which is rare these days. No matter what time of day I stop off for food, there are always a lot of customers (which is always a good sign) but I've never had to wait long for my food.

Such a great institution and should have total support from Lewisham Council - shame on them.  Good luck to you.

I am a member of the Blackheath Society. I think they generally do a great job, but I do not understand why they object so strongly to the hut.  As far as I can see, it is no trouble at all.

When I used to tour (I'm an opera singer) I would get back to the village after a show at about 2 or 3 in the morning and I would have been away for a few weeks and so there would be no food or milk at home. I always stopped at the hut for a cuppa and a burger and really appreciated it being there.

I certainly want it to survive..............Long may it last...........

Great place, shame on the council for not supporting this institution. We need more places like this, they give a place character. I expect the local societies and the council would rather have the blandness of the homegenised high street that has become the norm around the country than something unique like OUR tea hut. Leave it alone. We love it.
